Companies love to generate buzz around their latest and greatest, promising devices that will revolutionize our lives.

Sometimes, these products deliver. But other times, they crash and burn in spectacular fashion. Enter the Rabbit R1, a portable computer that’s become a poster child for how not to launch a product.

The Rabbit R1, a voice-controlled AI device that can handle various tasks such as internet searches, music playback, and ordering services like DoorDash and Uber, is set to receive updates addressing user concerns and feedback.

The Rabbit R1, priced at $199, uses its proprietary Large Action Model (LAM) and has been praised for its responsiveness and the breadth of its functionalities.

Nevertheless, some reviewers have underscored certain limitations, such as its dependency on cloud-based services and restrictions on accessing some features. More on that below.

Early adopters have taken to the internet to express their outrage and disappointment with the device. A post on the Rabbit R1 subreddit titled “This thing is such a piece of crap” sums up the general sentiment nicely.

Users are reporting a laundry list of issues, from slow performance to subpar build quality

“I was expecting a premium device given the price, but this thing feels cheap as hell,” wrote one user. “The plastic is flimsy, the screen is meh…it just doesn’t feel solid in the hand at all.”

Others have noted issues with the software, citing bugs, instability, and a general lack of polish. For an Android-based device, this is inexcusable.

“I’ve had apps force close constantly, and sometimes the touchscreen just stops responding,” said another user. “It’s like they rushed this to market without even beta testing it.”

The R1’s battery life has also been called into question. The company promised all-day usage, but many users are finding the battery drains quickly. “I barely get 4 hours of moderate use,” wrote one frustrated owner. And the charging is painfully slow. This thing is less portable than my laptop.”

In response to the backlash, the company issued an OTA software update to address some of the community’s concerns. However, many users feel this is too little and too late.

“I’ve submitted support tickets and gotten nothing but radio silence,” said one user. “It feels like they’ve just moved on to the next product and don’t care about the people who shelled out money for this thing.”

The lack of communication and failure to address issues in a timely manner have eroded trust in the brand, so much so that many are canceling their preorders.

Threads on the Rabbit R1 subreddit titled “Ready for the trash” have garnered numerous responses, with users citing the negative reviews and lack of meaningful communication from the manufacturer as reasons for their decision.

This level of pre-order cancellation is a stark indictment of how poorly the launch has been handled. It’s clear that the manufacturer has failed to meet expectations and that trust in the product and company has been severely damaged.

The Rabbit R1 is a masterclass in how not to launch a product. In their haste to get this thing on shelves, the manufacturer clearly neglected to do even the most basic quality assurance. Now they’re paying the price, with a reputation in tatters and users fleeing in droves.

But of course, there’s always that one person that’s like:

“To the R1 naysayers, Sorry you are disappointed with R1, but ya’ll are the same techies that watched the same video I did when Jesse first introduced it to the world, one user writes.” “And everyone who watched or read anything about it knew it is still in the development stage but ordered it anyway, knowing that it would take awhile to work the “bugs” out. I don’t find a lot of your criticisms valid. The more you cancel your orders, the sooner I’ll be getting my R1!”

I personally wouldn’t be surprised if this was written by someone who works for the company. But the follow-up response is as classic Reddit as you’ll ever get: “I was you a week ago then I got my r1….”

If they want to salvage anything from this dumpster fire, they need to take a hard look in the mirror and rethink their entire approach. In the cutthroat world of portable computing, you can’t afford to halfass it.

To anyone still eyeing the R1, let this be a warning: don’t fall for the marketing fluff. Dig deep, read the reviews, and talk to people who actually use the thing.

Specs are meaningless if the device is a joyless slog to use. You deserve better than some clunky, buggy brick draining your bank account and your patience.

The Rabbit R1 is a stark reminder that at the end of the day, it’s all about delivering on your promises. And on that front, this thing is an epic fail.

The company has a hell of a hill to climb if they want to win back the trust they’ve so spectacularly squandered. We’ll be watching, but for now, there are far better ways to spend your hard-earned cash.

Otherweb is an AI-powered news app with no ads and clickbait https://knowtechie.com/otherweb-news-app-ai-news/ https://knowtechie.com/otherweb-news-app-ai-news/#comments Fri, 10 May 2024 16:13:25 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=414785 If I were to design a news app in 2024, Otherweb would be that app. About ten years ago, when I founded KnowTechie, the idea was to simplify the overwhelming world of tech news.

Much like Otherweb, we started with a vision to distill boring 2,000-word articles into concise 200-word summaries that delivered the essence without the fluff.

This resonated because I knew then, and still firmly believe, that around 80% of readers don’t want or have the time for long-form content—they lack attention spans. This insight isn’t based on extensive research or science but a decade of observing and understanding reader behaviors.

The Otherweb app, the brainchild of an Austin-based startup led by my friend Alex Fink, is a unique AI-powered news platform. It’s not just another news app but a transformative tool that promises to reshape how we consume news and offer a ‘better way’ to do it.

Otherweb stands out by pledging no clickbait, bias, or ads. Here’s what makes it unique:

Otherweb, with its AI-powered curation and streamlined experience, is your personal news assistant.

It automatically collects articles from across the web every minute and runs them through specialized AI models to generate metadata like summaries, alternative headlines, and content traits. You can try out a web version of their assistant here.

This real-time filtering and hyper-personalization of your news feed, delivered in a clean, distraction-free environment, respects your time and preferences, relieving you from the overwhelming task of sifting through endless overly sensationalized headlines and news articles.

As Fink explains: “We collect articles once per minute, and as soon as they’re parsed, we run them through all our AI models to generate metadata that includes summaries, alt headlines, and various measured traits.”

You can check out a mockup of the clean interface and summarized article format below:

Image: KnowTechie

Otherweb Concierge feature uses advanced language models to compose personalized briefings tailored to users’ unique interests. I recommend new users spend 5-10 minutes customizing their settings to get relevant content.

Otherweb actively encourages user input by letting folks vote on articles and provide feedback — shaping the news in a way that genuinely values user voices.

How does Otherweb generate revenue?

While squarely focused on quality content for users, Otherweb plans to monetize through paid tools and services for journalists and publications powered by the same proven AI models. Potential offerings include assisted research, automated draft summarization, and predictive analytics.

Fink tells me Otherweb’s user base skews older, more educated, and represents a healthy mix of political leanings. This means that the app caters to diverse users, from tech-savvy professionals to news enthusiasts.

User feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, resonating with heavy news consumers and those who had previously tuned out due to the negativity of traditional media.

On Google Play, the app has earned a 4.0-star rating based on 16 reviews, with users highlighting how Otherweb AI-powered filters help them cut through the noise and protect them from the pervasive clickbait and low-quality content found on many other platforms.

They appreciate how the app allows them to focus on the essential news and insights, without the distractions that often accompany traditional news consumption.

Despite the generally positive reception, Otherweb has faced some criticism. Emerging Tech Brew points out that the app could become overly curated, limiting users’ exposure to diverse viewpoints.

Others have expressed concerns about Otherweb business model’s sustainability, given its commitment to prioritizing information quality over profits (god forbid, right?).

What excites me most is how Otherweb mission aligns perfectly with KnowTechie’s founding goal of simplifying tech news into digestible summaries.

As they continue evolving, their AI-driven, transparent approach is restoring public trust in an industry that desperately needs it. This is the future of how we’ll all consume news efficiently.

Otherweb is available on the App Store, Google Play, and on the web at Otherweb.com

Comcast launches NOW prepaid Internet and mobile brand https://knowtechie.com/comcast-launches-now-prepaid/ https://knowtechie.com/comcast-launches-now-prepaid/#respond Thu, 09 May 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=413900 Cable giant Comcast announced the nationwide launch of its NOW brand of prepaid Internet and mobile services this week.

The NOW offerings promise “no contract” options at “affordable” prices, but a closer look raises questions about the company’s true motives and how much consumers will really benefit.

According to Bill Connors, President of Connectivity and Platforms at Comcast, “NOW is a simple, reliable, and low-cost way for people to get Internet and Mobile service on their own terms.”

However, the timing of this launch, just as government subsidy programs like the Affordable Connectivity Program are set to expire, suggests Comcast may be more focused on capturing customers losing benefits than genuinely expanding affordable access.

Laptop on desk displaying "NOW" on screen
Image: Comcast

Under the NOW brand, Comcast offers prepaid Internet plans starting at $30 per month for 100 Mbps speeds and $45 for 200 Mbps.

On the mobile side, NOW Mobile offers unlimited plans for a flat rate of $25 per line, regardless of whether a customer has Xfinity Internet or NOW Internet.

According to a company spokesperson, customers need one of those services to access NOW Mobile. If they discontinue Xfinity or NOW Internet, the price per line remains $25.

It’s also worth pointing out that this is the price with taxes and fees included. So, what exactly are subscribers getting for that price?

  • Unlimited talk, text, and data
  • Nationwide 5G
  • Access to over 20 million Xfinity WiFi hotspots
  • Flexibility to pause and resume your service

Restrictions apply. Xfinity post-paid or NOW Internet required. A one-time line setup fee of $25 per line applies. International and roaming charges are additional. Payments must be made online only via credit, debit, or prepaid card. Autopay and paperless billing are required. Pricing is subject to change. Speeds may be reduced after 20GB of usage per line. During times of congestion, your data may be temporarily slower than other traffic.

As government subsidies wind down, consumers seeking budget connectivity choices will have to decide if Comcast’s NOW is really the answer or just more of the status quo wrapped in slick new marketing.

Those interested can find more details at Xfinity stores and online.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article misstated the pricing for Comcast’s NOW Mobile service; it has now been updated to reflect the correct $25/line flat rate pricing.

Nintendo confirms Switch 2 announcement before April 2025 https://knowtechie.com/nintendo-confirms-switch-2/ https://knowtechie.com/nintendo-confirms-switch-2/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 14:12:12 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=411767 Nintendo has confirmed that the successor to the Nintendo Switch console will be announced before April 2025, with a deadline of March 31st, 2025, reports Bloomberg. This aligns with the current rumored launch in Q1 2025.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the Switch 2 console will not be mentioned during the upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation in June.

Per The Verge:

We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.

Nintendo tweet about new Switch successor announcement.

Despite the anticipated slowdown in Switch console sales, Nintendo remains committed to putting multiple Switch consoles in every home.

Rumors surrounding the speculated Switch 2 hint at an 8-inch display and the inclusion of backward compatibility with original Switch games and Joy-Cons.

There are talks of new Joy-Cons that could attach magnetically, signaling potential exclusivity with the new console. Until Nintendo officially announces it, this is still speculation, and we’ll get the bigger picture later in the year.

OpenAI rumored to launch ChatGPT search engine this week https://knowtechie.com/openai-chatgpt-search-engine/ https://knowtechie.com/openai-chatgpt-search-engine/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 18:59:31 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=410925

UPDATE 5/10/2024: Open AI officially announced an event for Monday, May 13, 2024. Sam Altman teased a demo event on X (formerly Twitter) for Monday, 13, 2024 and claims “it feels like magic.”

ChatGPT is rumored to be rolling out a search engine this week, and truthfully, the timing couldn’t have been any better. More on that later.

Speculations are circulating after a new domain, “search.chatgpt.com,” appeared in the wild, generating enthusiasm and curiosity among AI fans.

Fueling the fire, AI influencer Pete Huang’s cryptic tweet “Search (dot) ChatGPT (dot) com May 9th” has set tongues wagging and fingers typing across Rumorville.

The rumors surrounding the potential ChatGPT search engine product seem to have originated from a post on Y Combinator’s Hacker News community.

Social media post by Pete promoting ChatGPT search.
Image: KnowTechie

This post highlighted the creation of a domain name and security certificate for “search.chatgpt.com,” stirring up speculation about what OpenAI might have in store.

Additionally, Huang’s tweet mentioning the same domain added more fuel to the growing rumor mill.

Is this rumor legit?

Short Answer: Probably not. If there’s any truth to it, there is probably a good reason why.

One logical alternative perspective could be that Pete Huang’s tweet about “search.chatgpt.com” may not necessarily indicate the development of a new ChatGPT search engine product.

It could be possible that the domain registration and security certificate are part of routine maintenance or future planning by OpenAI, rather than a direct indication of a new product launch.

open ai logo
Image: OpenAI

Furthermore, speculations based solely on a domain name and a tweet may not always accurately reflect a company’s actual plans or developments.

OpenAI dropping a search engine out of the blue like this is going a ton of folks happy. very happy

But hey, if OpenAI were to drop a search product this week, oof, it would be a direct call to arms for Google.

Remember, this is the same company that made Google rush out two utterly trash chat-like products. They were so bad that Google shut one down and then rolled out Gemini, which was called something else and something else before that.

As for an OpenAI search engine, We’ll keep an ear to the ground, but again, don’t hold your breath.

YouTube Premium launches ‘Jump Ahead’ AI to skip dull content https://knowtechie.com/youtube-premium-jump-ahead/ https://knowtechie.com/youtube-premium-jump-ahead/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 15:41:24 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=410794 YouTube Premium just got a whole lot more premium. The platform rolled out a new AI-powered ‘Jump Ahead’ feature that lets users skip to the most interesting parts of videos.

The feature has been tested since March and is now widely available on the YouTube Android app for English-language videos.

It uses machine learning to analyze viewer behavior and identify the parts of videos that people typically skip. Premium subscribers can then tap a button to fast-forward to these key sections.

How to access YouTube Premium’s Jump Ahead feature

To use YouTube Premium’s new “Jump ahead” feature, simply double-tap to fast-forward in a video. A pill-shaped “Jump ahead” button will appear briefly in the bottom-right corner. Tap it to skip to the section most viewers typically fast-forward to.

You can access this and other experimental features on the YouTube mobile app through Settings > Try experimental new features.

“Jump Ahead” aims to save users time by cutting out the less engaging content. But will it change the way we watch videos on YouTube? And will it make its way to other platforms?

To answer the first question, probably not. At least not yet. People are still getting used to the idea of YouTube Premium. If YouTube keeps this feature locked behind a paywall, it might take a while for it to catch on.

As for other platforms copying this, well, you can bet on it. Tech companies love to copy each other’s good ideas. If YouTube’s AI-powered skipping works well, you’ll see similar features popping up everywhere.

For now, Premium Android subscribers in the US can test this feature themselves. No word yet when this comes to iPhone.

So, if you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber in the US with an Android device, watch for the “Jump Ahead” button. It might just be the time-saving tool you never knew you needed.

Baltimore high school rocked by AI voice impersonation scandal https://knowtechie.com/ai-clone-teacher-baltimore/ https://knowtechie.com/ai-clone-teacher-baltimore/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 14:24:48 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=410727 In what could be straight out of a twisted episode of “Black Mirror,” a Baltimore high school’s saga unfolds with a PE teacher turning techno-villain.

A former gym teacher at a Baltimore high school supposedly created a voice clone of his boss, Principal Eric Eiswert, using newly developed AI voice tools.

His mission? To flood social media with racist and anti-Semitic nonsense, all cleverly disgorged in the principal’s own voice.

Think about that: AI that can mimic your voice to spew hate speech? Yeah, we’re living in that era. What’s even scarier is that dozens of these companies are out there already. Most notably, Eleven Labs.

Why the high-tech backstabbing, you ask? Honestly, who knows the real reason? According to sources, the rogue PE teacher wasn’t too pleased about his fading job prospects and alleged questions about handling of school funds.

The result? Absolute chaos. The voice clone was convincing enough to push Principal Eiswert to a temporary resignation because who wants to stick around when their digitized doppelgänger is a bigot?

Video: WBLAL

Enter the cavalry

Forensic analysts from the FBI and the University of California offered a helping hand and traced the voice shenanigans back to our not-so-innocent teacher. Cue the arrests and a new level of debate about the power and peril of AI.

Baltimore County’s school board calls this ordeal a “deeply concerning frontier” in tech abuse. And honestly? It’s hard to disagree.

This isn’t just about one rogue teacher; it’s a stark reminder of the Pandora’s box we’ve flung open with all the recent AI advances popping up everywhere. So it’s probably safe to say, we’re going to see a lot of this moving forward.

Doesn’t this scare the living pants off you? Let us know what you’re thinking by dropping a comment below.

At the heart of the update is the “Edit Message” feature. Users can correct embarrassing typos or awkward autocorrect fails within five minutes of sending a message, as long as the recipient hasn’t read the. message.

This feature will initially be exclusive to Snapchat Plus subscribers, mirroring the paywall strategy seen on X Premium (everyone still calls it Twitter Blue.)

But Snapchat isn’t stopping there. The app also introduces emojis and map reactions, allowing users to express their feelings or share their location.

New features are also coming to Snapchat’s My AI chatbot. You can now ask My AI to help you remember important deadlines by setting up a countdown for you.

For those who love customizing their Bitmoji, Snapchat is rolling out a new AI tool that lets you design your own clothes.

And if you’re feeling creative, you can use AI Lenses to create a retro ’90s version of yourself, complete with a Polaroid-style filter, by simply uploading a selfie.

The new Snapchat features are available now, but editable messages for Plus subscribers are still to come.

How to unlike deleted pages on Facebook https://knowtechie.com/does-facebook-let-you-unlike-inactive-pages/ https://knowtechie.com/does-facebook-let-you-unlike-inactive-pages/#comments Tue, 30 Apr 2024 02:44:11 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=172016

Quick Answer: To unlike deleted pages on Facebook, go to your Activity Log, find Connections, and click on Pages, page likes, and interests. Scroll to the page you want to unlike and select “Unlike.” We’ve included detailed instructions below.

Facebook isn’t just a social network with 3.07 billion users; it’s a living history of our evolving passions.

Remember the rush of liking every page that caught your fancy? That was us, painting our digital identity with broad strokes of enthusiasm.

But as we mature, so does our digital footprint. The pages we once liked are relics of our past selves, cluttering our present. It’s time to curate our online presence as meticulously as we do our real lives.

Here’s the ultimate guide to decluttering your Facebook life: “How to Delete Unliked Facebook Pages.”

hiding liked pages on facebook
Image: KnowTechie

Getting rid of active pages is straightforward, but what about pages you’ve liked that no longer exist?

They still show up on your profile for some reason. So, can you unlike those Facebook pages even after they’ve been deleted?

Can you unlike liked pages that no longer exist?

Short Answer: Yes.

Facebook allows users to unlike deleted or inactive pages, but previously they didn’t.

For example, if one of the pages you liked in the past went dormant or got deleted, there was no way to remove it from your list of liked pages. It just sat there in social purgatory. Thankfully, that’s changed.

Here’s how it used to work

If one of the pages you liked in the past went dormant or got deleted, there previously wasn’t a way to remove it from your list of liked pages. It just sat there in social purgatory.

The deleted page wouldn’t appear in your liked ‘Pages’ on your dashboard and never appeared on your Facebook Activity Log.

The only place that these deleted liked pages displayed was on your profile. So anyone who came along would see that you liked an ancient meme page in 2014.

The only option you had to hide those inactive liked pages from your profile was to remove that section entirely from your bio.

How to unlike deleted or inactive pages on Facebook

Facebook now lets you unlike deleted or inactive pages, and the process is as straightforward as unliking any active page. Here’s how to do it.

Total time: 2 minutes

  1. Make your way over to Settings & Privacy

Click your profile image on the top right-hand corner and tap on Settings & privacy

step 1 of an image describing a how to for deleting deleted or inactive pages on Facebook

  2. Activity Log

    Then select Activity Log

    remove deleted facebook like

That’s how to remove liked pages that no longer exist. That’s it. And if you’re looking on how to remove deleted pages from your Facebook likes, the process is exactly the same.

To do this, navigate to your desktop profile and select the About section.

From there, scroll down until you find the Likes section that shows all the pages you’ve liked.

Then, click the three-dot menu at the top right and select Hide Section, and that section will be removed from your profile.

Apple needs this OpenAI deal, or else it’s toast https://knowtechie.com/apple-openai-deal-panic/ https://knowtechie.com/apple-openai-deal-panic/#respond Mon, 29 Apr 2024 15:53:27 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=402162 It seems Apple has entered panic mode, believing that locking down OpenAI is the only way to stay relevant. Why?

OpenAI is a trendsetter in AI, the kind of cool new friend everyone wants at their party because they make everything better—a bit like the person who always has a new story or game up their sleeve.

Apple feels that they’re just part of the crowd without this edge. And I imagine Tim Cook wouldn’t want this to be his lasting legacy.

Apple is reportedly spending a lot of money to complete this deal, which makes you wonder if they remember how to innovate independently.

It’s like they’re trying to buy a shortcut to success because they’ve lost confidence in coming up with the next big idea themselves.

This isn’t just about Apple and OpenAI. Google and Microsoft are also in the mix and aren’t just watching from the sidelines. They’re active players in the AI game, making this situation feel like a high-stakes poker match where Apple’s sweating and the others are calling bluff after bluff.

Sure, landing a deal with OpenAI could be great for Apple. It could boost their products and make them seem super innovative again.

Siri on the iPhone using ai tools
Image: Unsplash

But let’s get real—is it really do or die? Tech history is full of missed chances and brilliant recoveries. Companies always miss out on trends and still find other ways to innovate and succeed.

Apple is tough. They’ve got deep pockets and plenty of smart people. Even without this deal, they won’t just disappear.

Deals like this are flashy and get everyone talking, but they aren’t the only path forward. No matter what happens with OpenAI, Apple will keep on ticking, finding new ways to surprise us.

As we watch this whole saga unfold, remember that it’s not always the deals you make that matter but how you play the game. And in the rapid-fire world of technology, the game changes fast.

Today’s panic could be tomorrow’s old news.

Who knows what the next big thing will be? Stay tuned, but don’t believe the hype that it’s all over if Apple doesn’t get this one deal. They’re down, sure, but definitely not out.

What’s your take on this? Do you want something like ChatGPT to replace Siri? Drop us a line below in the comments, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Match CEO doesn’t care if you fall victim to a romance scam https://knowtechie.com/romance-scams-match-com-ceo/ https://knowtechie.com/romance-scams-match-com-ceo/#respond Mon, 29 Apr 2024 14:20:28 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=402028 When it comes to online dating, trust is everything. But when it comes to romance scams on Match.com, some feel the company’s leadership is doing more harm than good.

According to reports, Match Group CEO Bernard Kim has shown a disturbing lack of empathy for victims of these scams.

When asked about the rising prevalence of romance scams on his platform, Kim responded dismissively, saying, get ready for this: “Things happen in life.”

“Look, I mean, things happen in life,” Kim told CBS when asked what he would tell customers who have fallen victim to scams. “That’s really difficult. I have a tremendous amount of empathy for things that happen, but I mean, our job is to keep people safe on our platforms; that is top foremost, most important thing to us.”

As expected, this callous attitude has sparked widespread outrage. Laura Kowal, a 57-year-old widow who lost $1.5 million to a scammer on Match.com, is just one of the many victims left in the wake of Kim’s indifference.

Kim’s dismissive attitude toward romance scams contrasts sharply with Match Group’s public statements. Match Group claims to take the issue seriously by investing in technology and partnerships to combat fraud.

But are they really? Critics argue that this emphasis on profit over people is exactly what enables scammers to thrive on the platform.

The consequences of romance scams are soul-crushing. It’s one thing to get duped out of a relationship, but it’s an entirely different beast when they take you for every penny you have.

Victims often feel a deep sense of betrayal and loss, not only of their financial resources but also of the genuine connections they hoped to find on dating sites.

As the FTC reports, romance scammers are master manipulators, using carefully crafted lies and emotional manipulation to steal both hearts and wallets, not to mention all the time and effort that goes into scamming people for money.

So, what can be done to hold Match and other dating platforms accountable?

Advocacy groups are calling for greater transparency and stricter enforcement of safety measures. They argue that CEOs like Bernard Kim must be held responsible for the well-being of their users, not just their bottom line.

As the FTC warns, romance scams are rising across all dating platforms. Until Match and other dating companies genuinely commit to protecting their users, they risk becoming company-wide scams.

For the victims of romance scams on Match.com, the CEO’s dismissive attitude betrays their trust in the platform and its leadership. As long as profit is put before people, the scammers will continue to win—and the victims will keep losing.

Do you know anyone who has fallen victim to a romance scam? Share their story below or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Is Amazon Prime the new king of streaming? https://knowtechie.com/is-amazon-prime-the-new-king-of-streaming/ https://knowtechie.com/is-amazon-prime-the-new-king-of-streaming/#respond Fri, 26 Apr 2024 14:54:43 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=398153 Who’s winning the streaming wars? Prime Video is giving Netflix a run for its money, and the latest JustWatch data is turning heads.

Could Amazon’s dark horse be leading the race? Let’s unpack the numbers that are shaking up the streaming scene.

According to JustWatch, Prime Video has now chomped a whopping 22% of the pie. Yes, that includes Disney+ and Hulu, which together scrape up 21%.

What is JustWatch? It’s a website and app that helps you find where to watch your favorite movies and TV shows across different streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu.

Oh, and then there’s Netflix, almost shoulder-to-shoulder with Prime, also clutching 21%.

streaming chart of popular streaming services like Amazon, Netflix etc.
Image: JustWatch

Netflix, hanging on like a cat on a curtain, holds more than double the share of Apple TV+, which apparently still thinks it’s in the race with a modest 8%.

Meanwhile, other contestants like Max and Paramount+ are nipping at heels, each trying to carve out their pieces of the pie with unique shows and desperate one-month freebies.

So, Prime Video’s current sprint to the front of the pack is nothing short of a marketing marathon, fueled by the Amazon juggernaut’s perks like speedy deliveries and exclusive deals.

It’s a clever bribe, really. Stick around for the shows, and hey, why not buy a blender on your way out?

streaming chart from JustWatch

And Netflix? They’re still the big, bad wolf of the block, relying on its smorgasbord of binge-worthy series and international cinema to keep ’em hooked.

It’s less about innovation and more about inundation; throw enough at the wall, and something’s gotta stick.

As we roll deeper into 2024, expect more tricks, more flicks, and maybe a few unexpected kicks as these giants and their kin duke it out for your precious couch potato hours.

Senate bill demands TikTok parent company sell or be banned https://knowtechie.com/tiktok-ban-senate-bill/ https://knowtechie.com/tiktok-ban-senate-bill/#respond Wed, 24 Apr 2024 15:31:01 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=395988

UPDATE 4/24/2024: President Biden signed a bill today requiring TikTok and its parent company ByteDance to sell US operations to an American company within nine months. The outcome of this decision is uncertain for now, so stay tuned for updates on how it develops. More here: President Biden has signed the TikTok ban. Now what?

The U.S. Senate has passed a gnarly bill requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a ban.

The bill, part of a larger $95 billion aid package primarily for Ukraine and Israel, combines international aid with domestic cybersecurity concerns.

The legislation grants ByteDance a nine-month timeline to complete the sale of TikTok, with an optional three-month extension if necessary.

The bill also restricts ByteDance from controlling the algorithm that powers TikTok, a crucial element behind the app’s personalized video recommendations.

Why It Matters

With TikTok used by 170 million Americans, the legislation reflects growing bipartisan unease over privacy and national security risks, particularly fears that the Chinese government could access user data.

This bill isn’t just about one app but points to larger tensions between tech autonomy and national security.

What it means for TikTok users

If you’re one of the millions who scroll through TikTok daily, what does this mean for your app experience? Initially, not much will change until a sale is completed or if the ban becomes effective.

However, watch for changes in app ownership or operational adjustments that could affect what or how content is delivered.

Legal Challenges and What Comes Next

TikTok isn’t going down without a fight. The company plans to challenge the bill legally, arguing it has always prioritized user privacy and security.

“This is still nothing more than an unconstitutional ban in disguise,” Jenna Leventoff, senior policy counsel at the ACLU, said in a statement Tuesday. “Banning a social media platform that hundreds of millions of Americans use to express themselves would have devastating consequences for all of our First Amendment rights, and will almost certainly be struck down in court.”

Past legal challenges by TikTok against restrictive laws have seen some success, so a protracted legal battle could ensue.

What You Can Do

  1. Stay Informed: Keep up with the news. Changes in TikTok’s ownership or app functionality due to legislative outcomes could affect how you interact with the app.
  2. Check your privacy settings: Regardless of developments, it’s always good practice to review your privacy settings on social media apps just to make sure that your data is as secure as possible.
  3. Start looking for alternatives, just in case: In the event of significant disruptions to TikTok’s service, consider similar platforms like Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
  4. Contact Your Local Representatives: If you’re concerned or wish to express your views on this legislation, contacting your local representatives can effectively make them work harder for your hard-earned tax dollars.

As this bill progresses from the Senate to the President and potentially into law, its implications stretch beyond Capitol Hill, affecting content creators like KnowTechie, everyday users, and international tech policy.

UPDATE 4/24/2024: It’s official today — President Biden has enacted the legislation that imposes significant restrictions on TikTok and its parent company ByteDance in the U.S.

The Senate passed a significant bill demanding ByteDance to divest TikTok or face a stringent ban. This legislation is a segment of a larger $95 billion aid package targeted primarily at Ukraine and Israel, where international aid intersects with domestic cybersecurity concerns.

ByteDance is given a nine-month window to complete TikTok’s sale, with a potential three-month extension if necessary. Furthermore, the bill curtails ByteDance’s control over TikTok’s algorithm, a crucial component for the app’s personalized video suggestions.

As expected, TikTok is set to contest the bill fervently, asserting its commitment to user privacy and security. And with any U.S. judicial process, the outcome is far from certain and it could take years to find out the final outcome. But for now, it’s the law.

If Biden passes this bill into law, will you bid the app good riddance, or do you have other plans? Drop us a line in the comments, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Tesla drops Full Self-Driving package down to $8K from $12K https://knowtechie.com/tesla-full-self-driving-price-cut/ https://knowtechie.com/tesla-full-self-driving-price-cut/#respond Mon, 22 Apr 2024 13:21:03 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=393383 Tesla owners and prospective buyers: There’s never been a better time to buy the company’s Full Self-Driving feature. Trust me—just take it from the guy who spent $12,000 on this feature just a few months ago.

The electric vehicle giant announced that it would be cutting the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software by a third, from $12,000 to $8,000. Tesla has reduced prices to encourage more people to use its advanced driver assistance system.

Despite the price cut, some (Okay, most) analysts and observers remain skeptical of Tesla’s approach to autonomous driving.

Elon Musk’s promises to have fully autonomous vehicles on the roads by 2020 have not materialized, and the company has faced scrutiny over the safety and reliability of its Autopilot and FSD features.

The latest price reduction comes as Tesla faces challenges in sales and inventory levels. By making FSD more affordable, Tesla aims to increase the use of its advanced driver assistance technology, which in turn will boost demand for this technology.

But wait, there’s more!

White electric SUV driving on bridge.
Image: KnowTechie

The company announced that it would be cutting the prices of its Model Y, Model X, and Model S vehicles by $2,000, each, in the United States.

The cuts range from $2,000 for the base Model Y to $7,700 for the top-of-the-line Model S, making Tesla’s vehicles more affordable for a wider range of buyers.

Tesla’s recent price reduction follows a pattern of sharp price cuts over the past few years. In 2023, the company reduced the price of its Model 3 by up to $10,000, and in 2022 it slashed the price of its Model S and Model X by up to $20,000.

These aggressive price reductions have made Tesla’s vehicles more competitive, but they have also raised questions about the company’s profit margins and long-term financial viability.

What is Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package?

tesla full self-driving
Image: Tesla

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software includes features like lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, which can make long drives on the highways much easier.

However, the technology is still considered experimental, and Tesla emphasizes that drivers must always keep their hands on the steering wheel.

The price cut for FSD could make Tesla’s technology more accessible to a wider range of drivers. However, the success of this strategy will depend on whether Tesla can deliver a reliable and safe self-driving experience.

Given the company’s track record and some skepticism, Tesla faces a challenging path to widespread adoption of full self-driving capabilities.

If this means anything, I’ve been using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving option for almost four years now, and I have to say, it’s truly a gift to have. It’s one of the many reasons I ended up buying another Tesla.

Honestly, I can’t see myself going back to a regular car again.

And what’s wild is that it keeps improving as they release new updates. Sure, when I first got it, the feature wasn’t perfect, but hey, that’s the cost of innovation. Imagine if the Wright Brothers hung it all up after their first flight.

So, why the sudden price drop?

Industry insiders suggest this could be a preemptive strike by Meta against other heavyweights like Sony and Apple, who are rumored to enter the VR fray soon.

It seems Meta is gearing up to lock in consumers with an affordable yet high-quality VR solution before the market becomes even more crowded.

The price cuts could also be a response to the lukewarm reception of Meta’s pricey Quest Pro. With sales on the sluggish side, there’s speculation that these cuts might be a tactic to boost overall user adoption by making the entry-level model more appealing.

Despite the speculation, this move places Meta at a competitive advantage, at least in terms of pricing. As Engadget reports, the Quest 2 remains a popular choice among VR enthusiasts, and with these cuts, it’s poised to attract a broader audience.

So, if you’re ready to take the plunge into virtual insanity, why wait? Unless, of course, you’re game for hanging around to see if Apple throws a knockout punch.
