Quick Answer: To cancel your Rabbit R1 preorder, send an email to their support team. We’ll walk you through, with some tips on what to say.

The tech world has been abuzz about AI devices this year, from Humane’s AI Pin to the Rabbit R1. It feels that both devices could have benefited from a little more R&D, as the reviews are anything but glowing.

But if the gloves were off for professional reviewers, that pales compared to the comments from early adopters using their devices. Let’s not forget that the Rabbit R1 is $199, a hefty chunk of anybody’s money.

From connectivity issues to the screen being corrupted with lines (or, in one unlucky user’s case, both), the Rabbit R1 doesn’t live up to its premium price and AI promises.

There’s hope if you preordered this device and haven’t received shipping details yet. You can cancel at any time before shipment, according to Rabbit. And, we really, really recommend you do.

While the Shopify storefront has one email to contact the company, the Redditors who tried that method say they were left waiting. Here’s how to get your money back without resorting to a chargeback.

Email Rabbit’s support team for your money back

Smartphone displaying order cancellation email request.

According to Rabbit, sending an email to support@rabbit.tech with your order number will get you squared away. Multiple Redditors got their refunds after a few days while using this method.

We recommend staying sweet, simple, and courteously asking for a refund of your preorder, rather than adding some of the issues other users have encountered.

Canceling your preorder is enough of a message to Rabbit that maybe they should have let the device stew a little longer.

This device was all fluff and no substance, with a hastily rushed out physical brick that barely covers a thin slice of what it was promised to do.

Do your bank account a favor and cancel your preorder if you were one of the few that bought into the hype. There are better ways to burn two Benjamins.

Did you preorder the Rabbit R1? Do you have one and like it? Drop us a line below in the comments, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Turn your phone into a telescope with this cool Kickstarter https://knowtechie.com/turn-your-phone-into-a-telescope-with-this-cool-kickstarter/ https://knowtechie.com/turn-your-phone-into-a-telescope-with-this-cool-kickstarter/#respond Thu, 09 May 2024 15:40:16 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=413908 Ever wanted to take photos of the moon or wildlife and felt let down by the zoom range on your smartphone? Then this cool crowdfunding campaign for the Excope DT1 is for you.

Billed as “the world’s lightest super telephoto camera,” this device pairs with your smartphone to get crystal clear images with up to 36x optical magnification. With flagship smartphone sensors topping out at 5x or 10x optical zoom, you can see why that’s a big deal.

What’s more, it has swappable optics, with options for the 400mm, 36x lens and a smaller, 40mm with 3.6x magnification. With both lenses being smaller than a soda can, you can always have the right lens with you.

Let’s dive into the viewfinder and see what else is going on.

Excope DT1
From $219

The Excope DT1 turns your smartphone into a telescope with your choice of 40mm or 400mm focal length lenses. That's up to 36x of optical magnification, with a 48-megapixel sensor for high quality images.

Check Availability
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.

The Excope DT1 is the long range lens your phone is missing

While the Excope DT1 has a mount for your smartphone, you can use it wirelessly if you prefer. That means you can set up the perfect angle, then kick back and relax until the perfect shot presents itself.

That’s great for nighttime photography, especially if you’re trying to capture celestial objects. And that’s helped by the 1/1.8″ CMOS sensor that captures more light and creates up to 48MP images.

With a $219 price tag for the 400mm lens kit, this is a cost-effective way to get into long-range photography and video if the claims of Beaverlab bear out in the finished product.

Even clip-on lenses for smartphones can cost $100, so to have a fully-featured, interchangeable lens system for just over double that is pretty impressive on its own.

We should also mention that backing any crowdfunding campaign is not without risks, as you’re backing the potential of a product, and reality might disappoint. You could receive something that misses the mark, or in some cases, no product at all.

Beaverlab does have a track record of successfully completing its campaign rewards on previous devices, so perhaps the risk is lower. Just be aware that the image quality might not match up to the marketing.

Huawei’s laptop division effectively ended by US chip ban https://knowtechie.com/huaweis-laptop-division-effectively-ended-by-us-chip-ban/ https://knowtechie.com/huaweis-laptop-division-effectively-ended-by-us-chip-ban/#respond Wed, 08 May 2024 18:11:33 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=412592 Huawei is back in the headlines today for falling foul of another US chip ban. This time, export licenses for Intel CPUs and chips from Qualcomm have been revoked, essentially stopping its laptop division for now.

It’s not the first time companies have been banned from supplying Huawei. Five years ago, the Chinese company was blacklisted by the U.S. Commerce Department, effectively blocking any US-based company from supplying them.

Then, in 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) declared Huawei to be a national security threat, pretty much banning U.S. telecom companies from using their 5G technology.

The U.K. banned Huawei’s 5G technology at the end of 2020, leading to a slow removal of their tech from the cellular networks.

Huawei now can’t buy chips from Intel or Qualcomm

Intel and Qualcomm had special export licenses worth hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of chip sales, as specific exemptions to the block on sales to Huawei. Now those licenses are gone, revoked this week by the U.S. Commerce Department.

These export licenses have long been a point of contention for rival Advanced Micro Devices, better known as AMD. The other giant x86 CPU chipmaker, who didn’t have an export license, likely lost out on hundreds of millions of dollars of sales.

Now they are gone, and so is Huawei’s rise in the Chinese laptop market. While Chinese companies are developing new CPUs, these are several generations behind current chips.

Huawei will have to work with what it can get for future laptop launches.

Fallout TV series boosts game popularity on Steam Deck https://knowtechie.com/steam-deck-most-played-april-2024/ https://knowtechie.com/steam-deck-most-played-april-2024/#respond Thu, 02 May 2024 14:14:43 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=405641 The effect of Amazon’s Fallout TV series can’t be understated, introducing the world from the game series to new audiences. It’s no surprise that Steam Deck users have four Fallout games in their top 20 most played games of April.

While it couldn’t beat Stardew Valley to the top spot, Fallout 4 was comfortably the second most played game on Steam Deck in April. Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 76, and Fallout 3 – Game of the Year Edition all found spots as well.

Likely a mix of new and returning players, this list shows the power of a well-done TV or movie tie-in to a video game world.

Even the lackluster Halo TV series set a Paramount+ premiere viewing record and likely gave Halo: Infinite and other titles a boost in players.

And for once, I found myself as part of the statistics. See, while I love the world of Fallout, Bethesda’s RPG games sometimes feel like a chore, scrounging for every little resource in the wasteland.

I’ve labored through Fallout 3 and all its expansion packs, played the factions against each other in Fallout: New Vegas, and tried to love Fallout 76. But I’ve never clicked with Fallout 4 until I started a new playthrough on the Steam Deck.

The sparse landscape of the wasteland around Boston is perfect for the smaller, low-resolution screen of the Steam Deck. I no longer wish to mod the game for better graphics, and I have yet to encounter a game-breaking bug.

And it plays well, with a solid 60 frames-per-second in almost every area I’ve visited. That might change later as I get into the downtown area, but it’s an impressive feat on the handheld gaming console.

The other thing that makes the Fallout series perfect for the Steam Deck is that the Gamebryo engine used for Fallout 3 ties its in-game physics to frame rate, so going over 60fps has wide-ranging effects.

This was fixed in later Fallout titles, but it still runs better at 60fps, in my experience.

Sure, Fallout 4 is nearly a decade old, but did any of us think it would run on a portable gaming console back then? The Steam Deck has brought interest back to old titles while also showcasing new (and admittedly great) games like Balatro.

If you excuse me, I’m returning to the wasteland to clear off some of my gaming backlog.

New to the Fallout series? Or are you a long-time fan doing another playthrough spurred by the Amazon TV series? Drop us a line in the comments below, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

‘Absolutely hard-core’ layoffs put Tesla in a tough position https://knowtechie.com/absolutely-hard-core-layoffs-put-tesla-in-a-tough-position/ https://knowtechie.com/absolutely-hard-core-layoffs-put-tesla-in-a-tough-position/#respond Wed, 01 May 2024 14:19:51 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=404305 Tesla is laying off employees for the second time in two months, and the cuts include surprising names. Among those let go are the executives responsible for the Supercharger network and new vehicle development.

The apparent reason? The company posted terrible quarterly results last week, with deliveries shrinking by 8.5 percent and net profit down a staggering 55 percent year-over-year.

The Information reports that Elon Musk sent an email to executives about the latest round of layoffs. In it, he said, “We need to be absolutely hard-core about headcount and cost reduction,” adding that he didn’t feel most of the executive team were “taking this seriously.”

Tesla’s Supercharger team is no more

tesla supercharger
Image: Unsplash

Perhaps to underscore this point, Musk laid off Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of EV charging, and almost the entire 500-person team that reported to her.

That’s the person responsible for the Supercharger network and her team. With charging being one of Tesla’s strengths, we can only wonder at Musk’s actions here.

But he didn’t stop there. Daniel Ho, Director of Vehicle Programs and New Product Introduction, and his entire team are also out.

It doesn’t seem like the low-cost Tesla Model 2 is coming out any time soon now that the team responsible for creating it is no longer.

The growing list of executives on the outs with Musk includes another two key personnel fired last month.

Drew Baglino, former VP of Powertrain and Energy Engineering (aka Tesla batteries), left, as did Rohan Patel, Head of Policy and Business Development. The entire brand-new 40-person ad team was also dismissed (via Electrek).

So, the person in charge of charging is gone, as are those responsible for new batteries and vehicles. Oh, and the person in charge of policy, who was crucial in this environment of rapidly changing legislation around EV technology.

At this point, Tesla is a shell of its former glory, run in an ever-increasing culture of fear of layoffs.

At one point, the company was the future, with promises of a greener future and vehicles that drove themselves into the sunset. Now, the company’s future is in doubt, and the remaining executive team must be wondering, “Am I next?”

Wonder what Musk is thinking? Can Tesla Self-Drive itself into the future? Drop us a line in the comments below, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

DJI adds beginner-friendly $299 Mini 4K drone to the lineup https://knowtechie.com/dji-beginner-friendly-299-mini-4k-drone-launch/ https://knowtechie.com/dji-beginner-friendly-299-mini-4k-drone-launch/#respond Mon, 29 Apr 2024 15:21:58 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=402087 DJI added another beginner-friendly drone to its lineup today, with the $299 Mini 4K. This tiny drone requires no registration but is packed with advanced capabilities like 4K recording.

While it only just launched, we expect to see the DJI Mini 4K on every list of the best consumer drones this year. Not many sub-$300 drones come with 4K recording capabilities, and none have the advanced flight algorithms of DJI.

The DJI Mini 4K captures video at 4K at up to 30 fps. If you want a higher 60 fps recording, it can, but at a slightly lower 2.7K resolution.

Bitrates have been increased up to 100Mbps, which should mean higher quality recordings, whichever setting you choose.

The DJI Mini 4K is a beginner-friendly 4K drone

The DJI Mini 4K is only 249g, keeping it below the threshold for registration with the FAA. That’s good for beginners, as they can learn how to fly without the extra steps needed for larger drones.

The companion app is also designed to be beginner-friendly, with one-tap movements for advanced camera tricks and for takeoff and landing with one touch. You can also fly manually as your skill improves.

The camera is on a three-axis gimbal for even more stable video and has electrical image stabilization. It also has strong wind resistance of up to 38kph gusts and a max altitude of 4,000 meters.

As a beginner, you should always keep your drone in visual range, but DJI says the Mini 4K can transmit 1080p video up to 10km away.

That might be stretching the limits of the 31-minute flight time, but it’s more an indicator of the strength of the connection.

The $299 DJI Mini 4K is also the second-cheapest “Mini” after the $279 SE version. You can get a Fly More Combo with three batteries, a charger, and a shoulder bag for $449.

DJI Mini 4K
$299.00

The DJI Mini 4K is the latest entry-level drone from DJI and the first in the "Mini" line to have true 4K recording capabilities. That makes it the best entry-level drone you can buy, with stable flight and beginner-friendly features like one-tap landing/takeoff.

The best drones for fun or professional use (2024) https://knowtechie.com/best-drones-personal-professional-use/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 19:43:55 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=368358 Just a heads up, if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale. Drones have quickly become a favorite of casual hobbyists and professionals, offering a new perspective on photography and digital LED display projects.

With this, the market is now saturated with options, from cheap $25 drones to ones that reach upwards of several thousand dollars. So it’s become a bit of a chore to determine what are the best drones just for fun, or for professional application.

Considering all the drone manufacturers on the market, there are two things to remember: Avoid all the cheap toy drones from strange manufacturers unless you want to replace them every third flight.

These drones are good for flying around indoors but usually break fairly quickly.

And second, you’ll see a lot of drones from DJI in the market, and on this list. DJI is one of the most reliable drone manufacturers, with a wide range of drones for all budgets and use.

Finding the best drone for you

Operating a drone takes practice and at least a sliver of skill, but it’s a fun way to connect with and observe your environment. Whether that be residential shenanigans or creating a different perspective of the world around us.

Drones are great for adding depth and creativity to translating the world into visual entertainment.

Before looking for a drone, decide what is most important to you. That could be camera quality, or ease-of-use, or automated functions that ease you into learning how to fly.

Also, remember any drone over 249 grams in weight needs to be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and before you fly you should take the FAA’s free TRUST test.

When shopping for the best drone, remember that the more you spend, the less it’s a toy, and the more it becomes a piece of professional equipment.

Where the Ruko U11PRO stands out among other foldable drones is with its flight time. At 52 minutes on a single charge, it’s one of the most energy-efficient drones on the market.

How to find the best drone for you

The feeling of freedom while flying a drone around can’t be beaten. The unique perspective on life can create some awesome photographs and videos and could lead to a nice side hustle.

When it comes to picking the best drone for your needs, there are some specifications that are more important than others. Things like battery life, stabilization, and strength of the remote control signal are all paramount to a good experience.

Camera quality is also important if you plan to record, and bundles with extra batteries and a charger are a good way to save some cash.

The best drones are the ones that fit both your budget and intended use while staying within the laws around responsible drone flying.

Please don’t spend $10K on this flamethrowing robot dog https://knowtechie.com/thermonator-robot-dog-flamethrower/ https://knowtechie.com/thermonator-robot-dog-flamethrower/#respond Thu, 25 Apr 2024 14:27:51 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=396917 If your dreams include flames, a creepy robot army, and thoughts of world domination, it’s probably time to find a good therapist. It absolutely isn’t time to purchase this flamethrower-equipped robot dog.

The $9,420 Thermonator is the brainchild of Ohio-based flamethrower company Throwflame, and it’s every bit as terrifying as that sounds.

It consists of the company’s new ARC flamethrower mounted on a robotic dog, which is controllable via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi from any smartphone.

It can throw laser-guided flame for up to 30 feet, either from gasoline or napalm.

It’s also not the only mobile flamethrower the company produces, joining the TF-19 Wasp kit that fits on “most cinema/industrial drone platforms,” which was released almost five years ago.

This terrifying robot dog is an irresponsible waste of money

Throwflame says the robot dog has around an hour of battery life, and the flamethrower on top can run for around 45 minutes. That’s a lot of barely controlled chaos in the hands of anyone with $10K to burn.

What’s more, only two of the contiguous states have specific laws around flamethrowers.

Maryland requires a Federal Firearms License to own one, and California says they can’t throw fire further than ten feet (Throwflame modifies any flamethrower sold to Californian buyers to comply).

That leaves 48 states with loose regulation. Sure, liability and criminal law still apply if something happens (and it’s a flamethrower, something will happen), but it’s still worrying.

The website doesn’t mention which Bluetooth variant is used. The remote trigger for the flamethrower has a 350ft range, but with the Bluetooth range of the average smartphone being 30 feet, it may not matter.

This is a movie prop, really, with limited real-world applications. It’s probably best left to the professionals, even if the general public can buy one legally.

Have any burning questions about how this thing is legal in 48 states? Wonder if it’s subject to leash laws? Drop us a line below in the comments, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Microsoft is once again putting ads in Windows 11 https://knowtechie.com/microsoft-is-once-again-putting-ads-in-windows-11/ https://knowtechie.com/microsoft-is-once-again-putting-ads-in-windows-11/#respond Wed, 24 Apr 2024 15:40:56 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=395977 Microsoft is again including ads inside Windows 11, this time in the Start Menu.

After testing the feature with a “small set of Insiders in the Beta Channel,” update KB5036980 was released on April 23 to include the feature in the public builds of Windows 11.

The ads include recommendations for apps in the Microsoft Store. These will show in the Recommended section of the Start Menu, where Windows suggests frequently accessed files or programs.

Previously, Microsoft tested ads in File Explorer, in the sign-out menu, and even in the Settings menu.

Windows 11 Start Menu is getting ads for recommended apps

screenshot of windows 11 start menu with an advert for 1Password highlighted
Image: Microsoft

If you don’t see these recommendations on your Start Menu yet, that’s because this is an optional Windows update and has only gone to a small number of machines. It will get pushed to every non-Enterprise version of Windows 11 in the coming weeks.

How to turn off Start Menu ads in Windows 11

You’re not alone if you don’t want your Windows 11 Start Menu to show advertising in any form, even for potentially valuable apps.

Thankfully, Microsoft has provided a way to turn off these annoyances. Here’s how.

  1. Open Settings and go to Personalization > Start.
screenshot of windows 11 settings app showing the "show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more" option turned off
Image: KnowTechie
  1. Click on the toggle next to Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more so it shows as Off.

That will turn off the Recommended section of the Start Menu, limiting the advertising you’ll see along with the sometimes practical recommendations for recently used apps and files.

While the ads seem benign, surfacing apps you might find useful, it’s a slippery slope to sponsored app placements for things you might not want.

I have no issues with Microsoft showing me ads inside the Microsoft Store, since I made a conscious effort to open the app and look at what’s available. I draw the line at shoving recommendations at my face while I use my computer for normal daily tasks.

Has Microsoft not learned anything from years of outrage against intrusive advertising at the OS-level? Drop us a line below in the comments, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Asus, Lenovo, and Xbox partner with Meta for VR expansion https://knowtechie.com/meta-quest-operating-system-third-party-hardware/ https://knowtechie.com/meta-quest-operating-system-third-party-hardware/#respond Mon, 22 Apr 2024 20:43:06 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=394239 Meta announced that the operating system that powers its Quest virtual reality headsets will be available for third-party manufacturers to use.

It’s an unexpected change from the company, whose Meta Quest headsets are the class leader in the U.S. market (via CNBC).

Meta says that the VR and mixed-reality market growth means there’s a place for “specialized hardware” designed for specific use cases like gaming, entertainment, or productivity.

Now, it’s partnering with trusted manufacturers to do just that, giving them access to the rebranded Meta Horizon OS that powers the Quest line of mixed-reality headsets.

Companies using Meta Horizon OS include Xbox, Lenovo, and Asus

Man playing virtual reality shooter game.
Image: Meta

Some of the biggest names in consumer hardware are already on board. Asus is working on a “performance gaming” headset. Lenovo is working on mixed reality headsets for “productivity, learning, and entertainment.”

And Microsoft is also on board, with its Xbox division creating a “limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox.” It’s not quite the answer to Sony’s PSVR, but it’s a start.

Details were scarce, but we imagine it will carry Xbox branding and make it easy to play Xbox Cloud Gaming in mixed reality, possibly bundled with an Xbox controller.

With Meta opening up its operating system to other manufacturers, it creates a similar situation to Microsoft’s licensing of Windows on the PC market.

That’s clearly the end game here, as the first operating system to gain widespread adoption with manufacturers often becomes the dominant force in the industry.

Other minor changes include the Meta Quest Store being renamed to the Meta Horizon Store, and the App Lab for experimental games being folded into the main store.

Also, Meta offered an invitation to Google and the Google Play Store, saying it could come to Meta Horizon OS with “the same economic model it does on other platforms.”

The metaverse as envisioned by Meta is no longer constrained to its own hardware. The only question left is will it ever gain mass adoption by consumers.

Will the best Meta Quest headset come from another manufacturer? Is the metaverse expanding? Drop us a line in the comments below, or carry the discussion to our Twitter or Facebook.

Faulty accelerator prompts recall of every Cybertruck sold so far https://knowtechie.com/faulty-accelerator-pedal-prompts-recall-of-every-cybertruck-sold-so-far/ https://knowtechie.com/faulty-accelerator-pedal-prompts-recall-of-every-cybertruck-sold-so-far/#respond Mon, 22 Apr 2024 15:30:14 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=393561 Tesla’s Cybertruck had a rocky start, with multiple delays before the first trucks rolled off the line. Now, it’s back on pause with a full recall to fix an issue with the accelerator pedal.

The recall covers roughly 4,000 Cybertruck vehicles, every single one delivered to customers since deliveries started in November 2023.

In a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week, the reason for the recall was the cover on the accelerator pedal, which “may dislodge and cause the pedal to become trapped by the interior trim.”

That’s worrying, especially if the cover comes off or gets stuck while the vehicle is in motion.

The brake pedal immediately cuts torque when applied, but Tesla drivers often practice one-pedal driving to take full advantage of the regenerative braking. That means there could be a lag between them noticing the issue and applying the brake.

The fix is in (for those pesky Cybertruck pedals)

Tesla fan and owner of abettertheater.com, Aaron Cash, posted a video from the Cyber Takeover event that shows how Tesla is fixing the accelerator issue.

The decidedly low-tech solution? Drilling through the accelerator pedal cover and the pedal, then adding a rivet to keep it in place.

Putting a protruding rivet on the pedal is an ugly solution for a vehicle designed to have its featureless surfaces be the star. Perhaps this is just a band-aid approach, and the pedal will be redesigned for future production models.

Indeed, from the NHTSA notice, the manufacturing process seems at fault, with “an unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal.”

Now, reading between the lines here, two things are at play. The accelerator pad is seemingly friction-fit to the pedal, and that tolerances are such that the line workers needed a lubricant to slip them on.

Tesla Cybertruck owners can contact the nearest dealer to get the fix, which we recommend they do as soon as possible.

You can now play Nintendo games on your iPhone without the guilt https://knowtechie.com/delta-game-emulator-ios-app-store/ https://knowtechie.com/delta-game-emulator-ios-app-store/#respond Fri, 19 Apr 2024 15:09:53 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=387868 Fans of video game emulators are getting some good news this week, as the first game emulator properly approved by the Apple App Store is now live. Called Delta, it can emulate a wide variety of classic Nintendo consoles.

Apple relaxed the App Store policies earlier this month to allow emulators, super apps, and mini-apps into the digital storefront. It also changed how streaming apps process subscriptions, allowing them to link to external websites for the first time.

Delta isn’t technically the first emulator to hit the App Store, as another app, iGBA, briefly appeared on the storefront over the weekend.

The thing is, iGBA was a clone of another emulator created by the Delta developer, who was annoyed that Apple approved that app before Delta. Apple has since removed iGBA, presumably under the App Store rule that forbids copycat apps.

You can now download Delta Game Emulator on the App Store

While Delta is available on the App Store for most parts of the world, iOS users in the EU must go to another source. That’s because the developer also created an alternative App Store, AltStore.

This is from another Apple decision earlier this year, which enables third-party app stores for European users if they are on iOS 17.4 or later. Alternative app stores can even be set as the default, which is a huge change to how Apple usually works.

Game streaming apps like Xbox Cloud Gaming or Nvidia GeForce Now can also come to the App Store, as they can stream the game content from their servers now instead of having to individually get them approved by Apple.

The walled garden that Apple has operated in for so long is slowly opening. To get to this point it took intense pressure from regulators around the world.

To stay open, app developers have to be careful. Otherwise, Apple will use issues as evidence to back up its claims of security through being closed.

Pimax announces high-end VR headset with swappable optics https://knowtechie.com/pimax-announces-high-end-vr-headset-with-swappable-optics/ https://knowtechie.com/pimax-announces-high-end-vr-headset-with-swappable-optics/#respond Thu, 18 Apr 2024 14:43:53 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=385596 PC gamers who want the best virtual reality (VR) experiences are in for a treat later this year. Pimax has announced two new VR headsets, one with a unique feature and one that lowers the cost of entry to VR.

The high-end Pimax Crystal Super VR headset has an interchangeable optics module, so users can pick the type of display they prefer between QLED and Micro-OLED.

That’s something no other virtual reality headset offers. Other high-end headsets like the Meta Quest Pro and Apple Vision Pro have locked-in optics with no options for swapping.

The Pimax Crystal Light is a cut-down version of the current Crystal headset, keeping the 2880p resolution screens but removing the standalone mode and a host of premium features. That’s okay, as it reduces the headset’s cost and weight.

Let’s dive into what’s coming later this year.

Pimax Crystal Super PC VR headset

Image: KnowTechie

The high-end Pimax Crystal Super has one feature that no VR headset has. That’s a swappable optical engine that can be either QLED or Micro-OLED, depending on which specs you prefer.

That’s made possible by a modular design which houses the optics and panel inside an easily removable section.

Image: Pimax

The QLED module has glass aspheric lenses with a massive 3840p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The Micro-OLED module uses space-saving pancake lenses but is limited to 4K resolution at 90Hz.

The downside of this change is that the standalone mode of the company’s earlier headsets is gone. That’s perhaps okay, as it makes the headset lighter and leans into Pimax’s strengths in optics.

The Pimax Crystal Super is available later this year, from $1,799 for the QLED module, $1,999 for the Micro-OLED module, and $2,399 for both optical modules.

The Pimax Crystal Super is a high-end virtual reality headset for PC users with swappable optics modules. That gives users the option of higher-refresh-rate QLED displays or higher color-accuracy Micro-OLED ones.

Pimax Crystal Light

Pimax’s Crystal Light isn’t a diet drink, although it definitely is a diet version of the existing Crystal VR headset. It drops the Snapdragon XR2 processor, battery, and storage that made standalone mode possible, and also drops the price.

You also lose eye-tracking, automatic IPD adjustment, interchangeable lenses, and the option for wireless connectivity, but Pimax says this enables a 30% weight reduction.

The display is the same 2880p per eye as the more expensive Crystal headset, with options with and without local dimming.

The Pimax Crystal Light VR headset has a $30 refundable deposit in pre-order stages. There are two versions of the VR headset, one without local dimming for $699, and one with local dimming for $899.

The Pimax Crystal Light is a more budget-friendly VR headset with the same high-resolution displays as the more expensive Crystal headset.

Things are looking good for VR gamers

Virtual reality is still a relatively niche technology, even decades after its introduction. Part of the reason is the expense of the VR headsets.

With Crystal Light, that cost has dropped substantially, albeit at the cost of premium features that make VR experiences better.

Pimax has said that the Crystal Light headsets will start shipping next month, with the Crystal Super headset scheduled for a Q3 2024 release.

Security startup put a paintball gun on a security camera https://knowtechie.com/startup-paintball-gun-security-camera/ https://knowtechie.com/startup-paintball-gun-security-camera/#respond Mon, 15 Apr 2024 17:57:09 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=380525 A Slovenian startup, PaintCam, has created a dystopian nightmare of an AI-powered home security camera that can fire paintballs at intruders or step things up to lob tear gas canisters in their direction.

Yes, apparently, it’s not enough to have a great home security camera system to deter intruders or catch them on video. Now you can roll your own security complete with automated turret defenses.

PaintCam Eve is the latest in smart home tech that should have died at the pitch stages. The only person who will get locked up by the authorities is the home owner that installed it, not any potential intruders.

Why? Because tear gas in canister form is illegal in many cities and states, even if pocket-sized sprays are often sold for personal safety.

That salient point aside, even firing paintballs at intruders could be problematic. The AI-powered camera system here can be triggered remotely through the app or by the on-device AI, with the user being safe at a different location.

With home and self-defense laws being as they are, without an immediate threat to personal safety, the homeowner would be the one being in hot water with the law.

And the claims of AI managing to detect trusted faces, family pets, or anything else? My video doorbell has trouble identifying packages on some days, so you can guess where my feelings lie here.

Even if we could trust the AI (spoiler: we can’t), how do we trust the owner with their finger over the in-app trigger?

The PaintCam Eve is launching via Kickstarter on April 23. It’s worth noting that the preview page for the crowdfunding campaign only mentions paintballs and not the reprehensible tear gas canisters.

Presumably, that’s because Kickstarter’s list of prohibited items includes weapons or “projects that are illegal, heavily regulated, or potentially dangerous for backers.” We’d imagine tear gas would qualify.

The generally accepted amount of water you should drink when exercising is 7 to 10 ounces every 10 to 20 minutes. That’s a guideline, but do you know exactly how hydrated you are?

Nix’s hydration biosensor sticks onto your skin, testing your hydration levels continuously.

You’ll get notifications on your phone or watch to “tell you when, what, and how much to drink,” so you’re always optimally hydrated.

Playpulse One

Gamification can improve your chances of success, something that Playpulse is banking on. Its take on home fitness is an exercise bike combined with a video game console.

The gaming bike has a 24-inch touchscreen and controllers built into the handlebar. Those can measure your heart rate while you pedal along.

You can play games like bumper cars or capture the flag with tanks, and get fit at the same time. We just hope it gets Xbox Cloud streaming in the future.

Ladder supplements

Fitness tech isn’t just hardware. Nutrition science has expanded lately, and the forerunner of the meal replacement category, Soylent, knows a thing or two about not skipping meals.

You get 20g of plant protein per serving, 28 vitamins and minerals, slow-burning carbs, and only 1g of sugar. That’s it. No nuts, no dairy, no gluten, and 400 calories that will fill you up when you’d otherwise reach for a salty snack.

The best fitness tech can only go so far

Even the most advanced fitness technology is only as good as your motivation. Sure, some of them can remind you to work out, but you still have to put the work in.

The day that you can sit on your couch and get fit is still a ways off in the future. Until then, you’ll have to be content with being able to track your workout and biorhythm data.

How to update your iPhone https://knowtechie.com/how-to-update-your-iphone/ https://knowtechie.com/how-to-update-your-iphone/#respond Fri, 08 Mar 2024 13:28:06 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=174416 Apple releases updates for the iPhone throughout the year, with a major update every fall. The major update is timed with the release of that year’s iPhone range.

Well, iOS 17.4 is here, with tweaks to autocorrect, and many other requested features.

This begs the question: How do you update your iPhone to iOS 17.4, and what do those updates do?

The smaller updates introduce new features that didn’t make it into the major release, as well as security patches and bug fixes.

Major updates, on the other hand, provide a comprehensive overhaul, transitioning your iOS from an older version to the latest one.

You can manually update iOS on your iPhone or let the iPhone do it automatically. The best way to keep your iPhone secure from attack is to keep it updated, so we’ll show you how.

How to update your iPhone

Open Settings
Tap on the Settings app.
Navigate to General
Tap on the General category.
Open Software Update
Tap on Software Update.
Select the update
Apple decoupled major updates from security ones, so tap the Upgrade to iOS 17.4 banner at the bottom.
Download the update
Tap on the Download and Install button.
Confirm the install
Tap on Install, then wait for the iPhone to finish updating and reboot itself.
And you’re done
Once the iPhone reboots, you should be on iOS 17.4.

Pro Tip

While you’re still on the update menu, tap on Automatic Updates and make sure that both toggles next to Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates are green. By doing this, you’ll never have to update your iPhone again manually.

ios automatic updates turned on mockup

Now you’ve got your iPhone updated to the latest version, iOS 17.4, patching out those nasty vulnerabilities that could have let attackers get into your device and bringing all the latest features.

That wasn’t hard, was it? Are there any other iPhone tips and tricks you’d like to see? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

Internal SSD replacements

Even with the new Steam Deck OLED, the maximum already installed storage option is 1TB. That’s a lot for a portable gaming console, but it might only be a fraction of your Steam library.

Thankfully, Valve makes it easy to swap the internal SSD for a new one. You’ll need a tool kit and an M.2 SSD in the 2230 form factor to do the swap, which is currently available in up to 2TB capacities.

It’s no secret the Steam Deck commands a lot of power. And if you’re playing it mobile, you’ll eventually need to recharge it. This is where the Nexode 140W USB-C GaN charger comes in.

Instead of waiting for your regular charger to juice up the Steam Deck, this charger can finish it in half the time.

The charger uses GaN technology, which generates a high-efficiency charge with less heat. This new technology is gaining popularity as it can deliver more power to devices than traditional chargers.

What would typically take your Steam Deck an hour to charge, this Nexode 140W can get it done in just 30 minutes or less.

  • Charges two laptops simultaneously

GuliKit Hall Effect (no drift) Electromagnetic Joystick Module

The image shows electronic parts on a purple background, including two joystick modules and two black circuit boards labeled "GuliKit" with various components.
Image: KnowTechie

Stick drift is a big issue, especially on smaller joysticks like those on the Steam Deck. These replacement joysticks fix drift once and for all because they use the hall effect for sensing.

Because they use magnets, they won’t wear like normal joystick modules. These units are only for all Steam Decks using Type A or B sticks.

What’s even better is that the redesigned joystick replacements don’t need soldering, so all you have to worry about is the number of screws it takes to get to that part in your Steam Deck.

The joysticks in the Steam Deck aren't bad, but will wear out over time and cause stick drift. This drop-in replacement from Guilkit uses magnets and the Hall effect instead, so they'll never drift and will stay accurate for years to come.

What We Like:
  • Two replacement joysticks for the Steam Deck with Hall Effect sticks instead of potentiometers so they won't ever drift
  • Comes with all the tools needed
  • Works with type A and type B Steam Decks

Apple AirTag

This might not be an exciting accessory, but it could prove to be a very necessary one. The Steam Deck is portable, and the last thing you want is to lose it somewhere.

So why not throw an AirTag in the case to help you keep track? Or go even further and slip the AirTag inside the Steam Deck itself.

And no, we’re not joking. One Redditor discovered there’s enough room to slip an AirTag inside the Steam Deck, thanks to Valve’s willingness for self-repair.

Just be sure not to interfere with any circuits inside the device, and you should be good to go. You can even use a little electrical tape as a safety measure.

How to schedule an email in Gmail and Outlook https://knowtechie.com/how-to-schedule-emails-in-gmail-and-outlook/ https://knowtechie.com/how-to-schedule-emails-in-gmail-and-outlook/#comments Sun, 25 Feb 2024 02:32:28 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=124767

Quick Answer: To schedule an email in Gmail, write your email as you usual would, then click on the arrow next to the “Send.” From here, select “Schedule send” and choose a date and time for the email to be sent. That’s it.

Quick Answer: To schedule an email In Outlook, create a new email, then click on the “Options” tab and select “Delay Delivery.” Choose the date and time you want the email to be sent, then click “Close” and “Send.”

Email is no longer a “reply as soon as you get this” sort of thing. I mean, it shouldn’t have been to begin with but try telling that to your boss.

That means you never really know if you should send that email now, or if you should wait to send it at a more appropriate time, which is why we’re going to show you how to schedule an email in Gmail and Outlook.

No one likes getting emails at 3AM, even if that’s the best time to send replies since it’s the only time of day where the oppressive heat isn’t affecting your brain.

Thankfully, you can schedule emails in most email clients, so you can write away at 3am, and schedule those replies to be sent at a normal hour.

We’re not going to tell you that this could also be a way to make your boss think you’re doing 9-to-5 instead of whenever the mood takes you but that’s very possible.

How to schedule an email in Gmail (browser)

Gmail makes scheduling your emails super easy. We’ll walk you through the process in two different ways. One is an interactive window like the one you see below. And the other is your traditional step-by-step listicile. Let’s get started.

Alright, let’s run that back again.

  1. Open up Gmail in your browser of choice, hit the Compose button and draft your email
  2. Instead of clicking on the Send button, click on the Up Arrow next to it, and choose Schedule sendGmail send schedulingImage: KnowTechie
  3. Pick from the preset scheduling options, or hit Pick date & time if you want a specific schedule you don’t seeGmail schedule send optionsImage: KnowTechie

That’s it, now Gmail will send it on your behalf at that time.

How to schedule emails in Gmail (mobile)

Gmail makes it easy in the mobile app too, and it’s the same if you’re on Android or iOS

  1. Write your email, then tap the three dots at the top-rightGmail app mail settingsImage: KnowTechie
  2. Tap on Schedule send from the options (this will be at the bottom on iOS, and in a drop-down on Android)Gmail app schedule emailImage: KnowTechie
  3. Choose one of the times Google suggests or pick your own time and dateGmail email scheduling optionsImage: KnowTechie
  4. On iOS, you then tap on Save at the top right, or Schedule send at the bottom-right on Android

That’ll stick the email into your Scheduled box, and you can edit it at any time before your scheduled time by tapping on it and selecting Cancel send. You’ll have to do the full scheduling routine again if you don’t want to send it immediately.

How to schedule emails in Outlook (desktop)

You can schedule emails really easily in Outlook, but you need to use the desktop app

  1. Start a new message and click on Delay Delivery up on the tools ribbonSchedule email outlookImage: KnowTechie
  2. On the Delivery Options section, make sure Do not deliver before is checked, and set the time and date you want the email to be sent out. Click on Close when you’re done, not the X in the top-rightOutlook scheduling emailImage: KnowTechie
  3. The email will go into your Outbox once you hit send, and stay there until the time and date you set. You’ll be able to make changes before that sending time, including the sending time itself

Just remember that you’ll need to keep Outlook running for it to get sent as scheduled, otherwise Outlook will send it the first time you open the program again.

There you have it, a quick guide on how to schedule emails in the most popular email programs!

Telecom providers across the country are down (Updated) https://knowtechie.com/its-not-just-you-att-telecom-providers-are-down/ https://knowtechie.com/its-not-just-you-att-telecom-providers-are-down/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2024 21:01:14 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=366146

UPDATE 3:55 PM EST 2/22/2024: AT&T restored its wireless service after an outage disrupted calls and text services for thousands of users. Federal agencies are investigating the incident, but there is no confirmation of a cyber or security incident. Other carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, and UScellular also faced disruptions, with AT&T being the most affected.

Tens of thousands of users of AT&T’s cellular network woke up to find they were without service this morning. This had a knock-on effect on multiple other telecom providers.

According to the popular outage tracker, Downdetector, the issues started around 3:30 a.m. EST, with AT&T customers noticing that their phones were without service.

That outage is still ongoing, with AT&T advising CNBC viewers to “use Wi-Fi calling until service is restored.”

This is only the latest in a string of high-profile outages in recent months, with services like ChatGPT, Fitbit, and Discord all having blips in connectivity.

So, what’s going on with the telecom providers

According to Arstechnica, the reports from other telecom providers are from a knock-on effect from a major provider having issues, in this case, AT&T.

The outage peaked at around 7:00 a.m. EST, with the majority of reports centered in five major urban areas: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles.

And emergency services around the country have issued warnings that the cellular outage could affect 911 services. We have accounts of Texan subscribers who have been advised to find a non-AT&T subscriber to call in case of emergencies.

AT&T has not disclosed the reason for the outage as yet. Maybe that’s for the best, as the telecom provider is still working to restore services to those affected.

We’ll keep updating you on this situation as it develops.

Streaming Super Bowl 2024? Expect more delay than play https://knowtechie.com/super-bowl-streams-delayed-watch-out-spoilers/ https://knowtechie.com/super-bowl-streams-delayed-watch-out-spoilers/#respond Wed, 07 Feb 2024 19:54:18 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=184836 The Super Bowl will be at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be the first Super Bowl at the stadium, creating an exciting atmosphere for Super Bowl 58.

That said, streams of Super Bowl 2024 will likely lag behind the picture shown on network TV.

Expect a base five-second delay if you’re watching on cable TV. Live TV always has a built-in delay to censor anything that shouldn’t be shown in its timeslot.

If you upgrade your streaming subscription or get a new smart TV to watch the big game, you might be disappointed that the delay will likely be over 50 seconds, regardless of the streaming service.

Check out the graph created by Phenix below that shows average lag times for last year’s Super Bowl.

They might have a vested interest in making other solutions look bad, as they’re a company that builds the infrastructure for real-time video and sports betting. However, the data still looks damning for streaming companies.

Super Bowl 58 will have a similar stream lag to previous years

graph created by phenix showing the average lag streaming services are behind the super bowl action in
Image: Phenix

Streaming lag is a big issue for real-time events like the Super Bowl, with every streaming service delayed behind the action.

The streaming services for Hulu with Live TV, Fubo TV, YouTube TV, and even the NFL’s app lag over 50 seconds behind broadcast.

FOX Sports was faster at just under 24 seconds, as they were the network responsible for broadcasting the Super Bowl in 2023, giving them a heads-up over the competition.

Phenix also showed that even with the same streaming provider, the delay could be even higher, over 130 seconds in some cases.

That’s an eternity in NFL terms, where the average time per play is just under 11 seconds.

Your internet connection doesn’t cause that delay, so upgrading your speed before you stream the Super Bowl won’t make a difference.

The latency is caused by the time the streaming service takes to record live images, encode them, and send them to your device.

Streaming services often add designed latency to ensure a clear picture, especially if you’re streaming at 4K.

Maybe stay off social media for the big game

someone using a remote on the tv for browsing shows
Image: Unsplash

If you avoid social media during the big game, you might not notice the delay. The sports fans most affected are those who like to bet on sporting events.

Anyone who wants to micro-bet on specific plays will not want to stream the Super Bowl this year. Your cable feed will even be delayed anywhere between “7 and 15 seconds.”

This season, the streaming delay has been terrible, leading us to get spoiled by so many plays on social media posts. This year, CBS is responsible; hopefully, the delay won’t be extended any longer.

The upshot? For 2024, cable TV still reigns supreme (at least for sports fans).
